Facing the interviewer
Have the right attitude
- When meeting your interviewer, grasp firmly the latter's hand and make eye contact while introducing yourself.
- Sit up straight, and lean slightly forward in your chair and skip joking.
- Establish a comfortable amount of personal space between you and the interviewer. Invading personal space less than 12 centimetres could make the interviewer feel uncomfortable.
- Be concentrated. Listen to what the interviewer is saying.
- Think before speaking.
- Don't sell yourself; make them want you.
- Be positive about yourself and your abilities.
- Show that you are sufficiently motivated to get the job done professionally and that the company's organisational structure and the team in which you will work fit you.
- Convince the interviewer that you are technically qualified to do the job.
- Demonstrate to the interviewer that you are truly interested in the company and the job position.
- Be enthusiastic about the job.
- If you have more than one person interviewing you at once, make sure you briefly address both people with your gaze and return your attention to the person who has asked you a question.
- Ask questions relative the job opening.
Be a professional – think like a professional
- Do not distract the interviewer.
- Do not talk too much.
- Do not be arrogant.
- Do not put down your previous employer.
- Do not open yourself too much. Be somehow reserved.
- Do not talk about your personal problems.
While the interviewer is talking to you, skip the following:
- Do not answer a cell phone or eat a sandwich.
- Do not rub the back of your head or neck or touch your nose.
- Do not cross your legs and idly shake one over the other.
Finalising the interview
- Be in control of the situation by being calm and quiet. Let the interviewer decide if the interview is over or not. When leaving, make sure your goodbye handshake is just as confident now as it was going in. Keep that confidence while you walk through the office building, into the elevator and onto the street
Interview from the phone
- Stand up and smile even if you are on a phone interview. Standing increases your level of alertness and allows you to become more engaged in the conversation
